VI NOVELL: The new (Spanish) wines are here!
November 30, 2016 UB

This is one of the coolest wine fairs around, and it’s a five-minute walk from where we live!

It’s a celebration of the new wines of 2016, a lot like the much-anticipated release of the Beaujolais nouveau in France. Well, that’s the premise, at least. Many bodegas have delightfully young wines that are still cloudy while others have more refined new wines ready for market.

The Vi Novell is the creation of the wine store Vila Viniteca in the barrio of the Ribera del Borne. It’s a street fair that takes place normally on or around the 23rd of November (a date that stays on my calendar.) This year, however it was postponed to the 29th.   It is a hugely successful event that the sponsors don’t feel the need to highly publicize. The hours are from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.; however by 7:00 we find that it is often too crowded for comfort, and we head for home.

For five euros you buy a glass and help yourself to the numerous wines that Spain, France, and this year even South Africa, have to offer. Wine makers are there to explain their products as they pour ample servings to an appreciative audience. Several local restaurants serve food (mostly free but sometimes costing only a euro or two.) Duck macaroni, sardines on the grill, fresh olive oil tastings…

The streets are filled with a festive crowd all celebrating the beauty of Spanish wines. It is a most joyful time for all!
